Large-Scale Positive Change and Impact Can Come from Unexpected Places

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers – AIChE

CHALLENGE:
Address major global challenges and demonstrate the ways in which the chemical engineering industry is a force for good.

.

SOLUTION:
The Doing a World of Good campaign, a five-year $15 million industry-wide global philanthropic initiative centered around 5 core transformative priorities to shape the future of the profession and use that expertise to advance solutions to pressing societal challenges.

.

IMPACT:
Since its launch in 2015, the Campaign has raised $17 million through the support of 120 corporate partners and more than 6,000 individual supporters. Funds raised are driving solutions to advance the safe and responsible practice of the profession; increase inclusion at each stage of the career continuum; research and innovation. Discussions are underway to build on the success of this initial phase of the campaign.

Pioneering a New Blended Capital Social Investment Fund

Housing & Neighborhood Development Services, Inc. - HANDS

CHALLENGE:
Maintain the affordability of several real estate properties in a gentrifying New Jersey neighborhood, to maintain their use for — artists, entrepreneurs and other change makers and community builders – committed to the community’s revitalization.

.

SOLUTION:
The Neighborhood Anchors Fund (NAF), a $2.85 million blended capital social
investment vehicle that ‘blended’ 3 different sources of funding and finance.

.

IMPACT:
The NAF was part of a longer-term commitment to harness the power of the Arts to revitalize neighborhoods in Orange, and East Orange, NJ. The NAF supported a portfolio of 7 real estate properties to serve as long-standing community assets, regardless of gentrification, including notable destinations such as Luna Stage and Hat City Kitchen. The fund has grown to $11 million and continues to provide for long-term affordability of properties in the community. Note the mural featured on the Melarbit landing page, by Dan Fenelon is painted on the side of one of these NAF funded buildings, that houses Luna Stage, in West Orange, NJ.

.

SOLUTION:

Using What you Have to Get What You Want

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - LLS

CHALLENGE:
Diversify funding in order to drive cures to leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

.

SOLUTION:
Build on the organization’s event-based fundraising through a relationship-based philanthropic giving effort, focused on blood cancer research, to stimulate large-scale philanthropic investments.

.

IMPACT:
Proved the organization’s ability to extend its resource development efforts beyond events, including the realization of the largest single gift in the organization’s history at the time, a multimillion-dollar philanthropic research gift. Over the years, these new sources of funding have led to the formation of strategic collaborations with biotech companies and academic researchers to accelerate drug development and pathways.

.

Note: Work with LLS was led by Melarbit founder, Bruce Arbit, and took place prior to the creation of Melarbit Partners, Inc.
