New Year, New Possibilities

New Year, New Possibilities

I no longer make new year’s resolutions. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion or a stake in how things will play out in the coming year.  Here is what I think are the (3) most compelling and defining dynamics that will continue to shape fundraising, philanthropy and Beyond.

1. Nonprofit organizations are vital and remain the dominant form of addressing social/environmental issues. However, they are not the only option. Regardless of what we call them – or their tax status – there is a broad range of  mission-driven social enterprises, entrepreneurs, investors/advisers and intermediaries – many who are doing good and doing well at the same time. What does this mean for your organization’s ability to attract resources?

2. Philanthropy is essential. And when used in conjunction with other sources of funding and finance we will have more robust resources that better match the scope of the problem they are intended to address. How can you take advantage of these emerging opportunities?

3. There is a growing generation of wealth holders – including but beyond professional foundations and those with generational or inherited wealth – who are interested in finding new ways to integrate and advance their social interests/pursuits – as they seek out and build lives of purpose.  What can we do to engage and help them leverage the full impact of their ideas, networks, and resources?

These and other issues are what we’ll be focusing on in the coming year.

So, why should you care about  any of this? Because each of these dynamics represent a shift in business as usual. More importantly, these shifts will open new options and opportunities to fuel your fundraising, broader resource development efforts– and ultimately your vision for change.

These are NOT either/or scenarios. They are part of what any social enterprise/entrepreneur needs to consider in the 21st century.

Stay tuned and share your thoughts about 2015. And beyond.
